God of War Ragnarok never stops surprising me with its characters and how they look.
God of War Ragnarok builds on the story of its predecessor and does a great job of bringing to life a huge number of Norse worlds and characters. It’s clear that everyone, from the main characters to the smallest side characters who only show up for a few seconds, is treated with the same care and consideration.
With all the exciting new features and interesting settings, it’s the perfect time to add more colorful and unique character designs that take the spotlight off Kratos for a little while. Here are some of the most interesting and well-thought-out character designs you’ll see in the Nine Realms.
Grýla
During your first trip with Angrboda through the beautiful scenery of Jotunheim, you find out quickly that she is not the only giant left. Her grandmother, Grla, lives in a house in the realm. She is very unfriendly and cold, and neither animals nor her granddaughter seem to like her.
Even though she only shows up briefly as one of the game’s bosses, her character is one of the most visually and emotionally complex. Grla’s huge size, torn clothes, hostile attitude, clouded white eye, and purple cauldron of souls make him seem like an interesting giant. But a lot of this is because she can’t get over the loss of her son.
Raeb
Bear McCreary is a well-known composer for movies, TV shows, and games. You may know his music from shows like Outlander and The Walking Dead. This time in Ragnarok, he is there for more than just the music. He also gives voice and appearance to Raeb, a dwarf musician you meet on your first trip to Svartalfheim.
Santa Monica Studio’s decision to make Bear McCreary a character in God of War: Ragnarok is a great way to show how much they like and respect his music. Raeb’s face and name are instantly recognizable, and the fact that he plays a hurdy-gurdy with runes on it makes him look like a charming bard.
Durlin
The real dwarf you want to find in Svartalfheim is a city official in Nidavellir named Durlin. He has a history with Kratos’s wife, Faye. Together, they tried to get rid of the Aesir but failed, and Heimdall burned his head. Now I understand why Durlin doesn’t want to help Kratos and Atreus fight Odin.
Since Durlin’s dwarf character is an official, he has some power. This is clear from the way his office is set up and how quickly he writes a fine for any small infraction. He is wearing scrolls around his body and has a braided monocle around his right eye. He has a bitter look on his face. His pet octopus, Dnner, is a fun part of his character.
The Norns
When Kratos was in Greece, the Sisters of Fate were his enemies. In Ragnarok, the Norns are like their Norse counterparts, but they aren’t really bad. Both groups are about fate and destiny. The Norns tell Kratos his fate in their own unique ways.
When you meet the Norns, you ride a Kelpie underwater to their straw hideout and talk to them under an underwater dome. This is a very cool way to meet them. They all have horns and the glowing yellow eyes and tattoos around their arms and faces that are signs of Norse gods.
Ratatoskr
In God of War Ragnarok, the funny angry squirrel from the first game is back, but this time with a new look and actor. The Norse mythological squirrel Ratatoskr was used as a rune attachment in the first game. It collected health and rage meter resources in a very funny way as you went on your journey.
In the sequel, Ratatoskr in his original form is a character who plays a slightly bigger role in the story. He even has a side quest. You were used to seeing him as a ghost, so his new look is a pleasant and cute change, especially his clothes, silly eyepatch, tiny pouch with Yggdrasil seeds in it, and sophisticated voice.
Heimdall
You start to dislike Heimdall as soon as you meet him at the top of Hrimthur’s Wall in Asgard because he’s rude and condescending, but that’s also what makes him a good bad guy and a boss you want to fight. Heimdall is very loyal to Odin because he is the protector of the land. This makes him act in a horrible way.
His rude comments are cleverly timed so that he says them when he thinks you are taking things from the environment or don’t appreciate how beautiful Asgard is. Heimdall is different from the other Aesir Gods because he has violet eyes that shine, he moves quickly like Hermes, and he rides a horned lion named Gulltoppr.
Freya
Freya was more of a side character in 2018’s God of War. She used her healing powers to help Mimir and Atreus, but the big twist was that she was actually Baldur’s mother. Ragnarok gives her more time to shine and also changes her character in big ways.
Freya wants to get even with Kratos for killing Baldur, so she shows up a lot in the first half of the story to try to kill him. One of them is when she turns back into the Valkyrie she used to be and attacks while wearing her old clothes and going by the name Vanadis. But that’s not the only way that her wings make her who she is. Freya can also turn into a hawk and fly around the forests of Vanaheim at one point.
Atreus
God of War Ragnarok shows that Atreus is no longer the naive kid he used to be. He has grown up a lot. The fact that he now knows he is Loki and that Ragnarok is coming close has made big changes to his character, which can be seen in many different game elements.
In Ragnarok, you can play as Atreus, and the solo story segments show how he is starting to go his own way and not depend on Kratos in battle. He now has magical powers that he can use against his enemies, and when he gets angry, he can turn into animals like bears and wolves.
Ragnarok (Surtr)
In God of War Ragnarok, you find out where the end-of-the-world character Ragnarok comes from and how he changes. His real name is Surtr, and he is a fire giant who rules over Muspelheim. With Kratos’s help, he is reborn as Ragnarok at the Spark of the World.
Both Surtr and his Ragnarok form look great, and it’s cool that you get to see the transformation. Surtr is made of fire, and you can see how the lava flows through the cracks in his body. His style as a whole looks like it was carved out of rock and is very stony. Ragnarok, on the other hand, is a show with a giant made of blue flame and a huge hole in his head. It looks like a Marvel set piece.
Lady Of The Forge
The Lady of the Forge, who only showed up for a short time in the second half of God of War: Ragnarok, had one of the most beautiful designs of any character in Drive Mad game. She is a mermaid who runs the underwater forge in the depths of Svartalfheim. In a beautiful sequence, she makes the Draupnir Spear for Kratos.
The idea that the Lady of the Forge is a mermaid is very unique and different from any other fantasy idea. She shines brightly because her webbed skin has bioluminescent tendrils that stick out. Her organic makeup is also affected by the kelp forest she lives in. For example, her hair and arms are made of a mix of green and red kelp.
