How to get qualified for the MBBS program in China bypassing the FMGE or PMC Screening Test

Pakistani students began applying for admission to Chinese medical universities in the academic year 2003–2004. However, it wasn’t until 2007–2008 that PMC established some qualifying requirements for Pakistani students to pursue MBBS, at which point the Medical Council of Pakistan approved a list of 30 Chinese medical universities. Only the Chinese Ministry of Education’s acceptance of the enrollment of overseas students in English-language undergraduate medical education served as the basis for this license.

From 2007 to 2008, the PMC website published the official criteria for admission to MBBS programs in China. Prior to now, in order to be eligible for the program, one had to complete the 10+2 or an exam of a comparable level in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology with a minimum cumulative score of 50%. Prior to traveling to China, the students were also required to apply for an Eligibility Certificate from PMC, which served as identification for the medical university. For a few years, there was uncertainty over this need for admission to the MBBS program; however, all students were required to get the eligibility certificate.

The Chinese medical universities modified their admission requirements for Pakistani students from 50% to a minimum of 60% between the years 2008 and 2016–17. The only explanation is that many of the students with poor GPAs who were admitted to study medicine were unable to keep up with the medical curriculum and would not be able to finish the five-year program. In order to improve the education of overseas students and increase the bar for eligibility, the Chinese Ministry of Education made some significant and stringent changes.

For all students who want to study medicine following 10+2 in Pakistan, the Medical Council of Pakistan began administering the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (MDCAT) in 2017–18. Nonetheless, many students in various Pakistani states were uninformed about the exam and were excused from taking the MDCAT that year. Without meeting MDCAT requirements, these candidates were permitted to pursue MBBS studies that year.

MDCAT was a requirement for all students who wanted to study medicine overseas during the 2018–19 academic year. Nevertheless, in March 2019, PMC granted a special exemption to candidates who had not passed the MDCAT-2018 exam and were planning to enroll in an international MBBS program or an equivalent program, up until the 5th June 2019 deadline for the release of the MDCAT-2019 results. Before being admitted to foreign universities, these students must apply for a PMC Eligibility certificate.

The MDCAT eligibility marks will be valid for a period of three (3) years from the date of result declaration, according to the eligibility for Pakistani candidates to study MBBS in China in 2019. These students will be able to pursue an MBBS in China, along with any pre-medical or language courses that may be necessary, and an MBBS or comparable medical program. Several Pakistani students studying for their MBBS at top-ranked universities in China and hoping to continue their education in the future can now breathe a sigh of relief thanks to the PMC eligibility regulation for 2019.

English-medium universities accepting Chinese medical students

The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree programs have always been taught in Chinese throughout China. Just starting in 2004, a select few universities were permitted by the Chinese government and the Ministry of Education of China (MoE) to offer this medical degree program in English. Simply said, China has always been highly renowned for its traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese medicine in general. Thus, in essence, MBBS in an English-speaking program was never a strength of Chinese medical education.

In order to attract more overseas students, the Ministry of Education (MoE) permitted a few more medical institutes to offer MBBS in English education starting in the academic years 2010–2011. In order to provide MBBS courses in English to international students, 45 medical universities in China received official approval from the MoE in the academic year 2014–2015.

Nonetheless, numerous local brokers from Pakistan and some of China’s lesser-known medical colleges introduced the idea of bilingual courses, leading to student misdirection by claiming that they would receive an MBBS education in both English and Mandarin. The pupils studied Mandarin in the first year, and starting in the second year, they had regular English-medium lectures. Because these medical colleges charge far less than MBBS universities that educate in English, the majority of Pakistani students favor them.

Several Pakistani students have protested to the Pakistani Embassy in China about difficulties they have encountered in such bilingual medical institutes during the past few of years. This is the main justification behind MoE’s need to officially state a statement to the Pakistani Embassy regarding the 45 medical schools listed below that have been given permission to offer MBBS programs in English.

In China, MBBS programs are offered in both Mandarin and English. Clinical Integrative Medicine, which combines Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine, is also offered in English.

Thus, if any Pakistani students want to study medicine in China in the English language, they must NOW MAKE SURE to gain admission ONLY in the 45 listed medical institutes of China, with tuition ranging from 3 to 8 lakhs per year. You would NOT be able to appear for the FMGE Examination, which is held by the Medical Council of Pakistan if any local agent advises you to attend any other medical institutions other than these 45 specified institutes.

The cost of studying medicine in several main urban cities, including as Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Sichuan, is higher than it is in other smaller cities. While studying in China, the cost of living and quality also fluctuate.

English-medium education is the additional factor influencing the variation in MBBS course costs in China. Certain universities have received approval from the Chinese Ministry of Education to provide MBBS courses in English medium. Some universities can afford to have a cheap fee structure because they do not entirely offer MBBS in English. But PMC has not given them permission.
